TOP OF THIS YEAR'S "HOT LIST" - GOING GREEN

The buzz du jour is not related to Gossip Girl's latest scandal, the new Facebook layout, or even which teen queen the JoBro's are dating - teens all over the map are talking about going green. From the trendsetters in the Hollywood Hills to the activists-in-training in DC, the 10 - 20 year old set is taking action to preserve our planet. While most of the major decisions and changes are in the hands of those who have left their teen years behind, the younger generation is packing a punch.

Eco-savvy entrepreneur, green business author and eco-chic lifestyle expert, Kim Carlson offers the following tips to help your young readers get empowered and go green:

•   Acceptable Nagging: Remind your friends of little ways they can help. Tell mom and dad to turn off power strips at night to cut down on phantom power loss. Advise your bathing beauty of a sister to shorten her showers by just a few minutes per day to save water and urge your BFFs to recycle all those fab magazines.

•   Eco-Friendly Fashionista: These days, you can rock the latest trends while doing your part for the environment. Try buying organic cotton clothes. The cotton is made without chemical pesticides, making it not only healthier for the planet but for your body as well. If those are out of your budget or not quite your style, hit up the local vintage stores to buy retro styles and accessories. These "recycled" clothes are a quick and often less expensive way to update your wardrobe. Toss your gear in one of the many bags on the market whose proceeds go to great eco organizations.

•   Mass Appeal for Mass Transit: Emissions from fossil fuels are some of the most destructive to the environment. Make the most of the public transportation in your city - catch a bus, take a subway or train, or walk. If you must drive, carpool with friends from your neighborhood to shrink your miles driven per person (and make the commute a little more entertaining!).

•   Green is Gorgeous - One of the easiest ways to cut your carbon footprint is by purchasing natural personal care and beauty products. Most on the market today are loaded with synthetic chemicals, although many cosmetic companies are taking steps to introduce eco-friendly and uber chic colors and combinations into their lines. Buying natural products also reduces the risk of allergies, asthma and other unpleasant ailments that occur later in life. Dont forget to store your makeup in cloth totes rather than ziplocks when traveling.

•   Snack Well When packing your lunch or grabbing that afternoon snack, choose human healthy items. Many munchies are made from all natural ingredients without using pesticides or food additives and are better for a developing body. Avoid snacks with lots of chemicals listed on the label.
